We all know that people fall through the cracks, how and why does it continue to happen?
A senior, Mary, had been asking for a food voucher from a Markham church for a couple months in a row. The food voucher system is meant to be only a short-term crisis solution, so the CPs from one Markham church looked into the situation.
They found that Mary had been living off of $460 per month, paying rent of $400. This left her with $60, which was causing her to supplement her income with food vouchers to survive. Mary was constantly finding herself out of money in the last half of every month for years and had gotten used to this way of life.
The CP verified what was going on and noticed that her support was most likely incorrect. So the plan was made that Markham churches would support her for the next 6 months with both home made food and vouchers to build a little margin back into her budget. During that time, Mary was to see a doctor to get a new diagnosis to take to her case worker.
As a result, her disability support was increased to $960. Mary’s response? “You know I won’t be needing the food support anymore. Do you think we can give those to someone else?” Brilliant!
